How To: Lightening Natural Hair, Naturally

Here's a quick how to on lightening natural hair naturally, without the use of abrasive chemicals. I've put up the most common two recipes I've seen on the net and will put up a part two with more recipes soon.

I've been threatening to change my hair color for a year now and my Tumblr and Pintrest both have evidence of my color obsession. Chemically altering hair color can be harsh and damaging to natural hair. Here are some ways to lighten your hair using natural ingredients. None of these mixes will turn your hair instantly blonde and are very gradual processes, but they are none the less permanent once you do get results. Using them will avoid the potentially harmful chemicals contained in hair dyes.

Honey
source

Honey lightens hair by releasing peroxide, but in much lower levels than chemical hair dyes. Due to the low levels of peroxide and honey's moisturizing properties, honey does not damage the hair. Honey lightening is a gradual process, but if you do it correctly you should see a difference after the first treatment.

Ingredients:
1 part honey
4 parts of water
(for example 3 tablespoons of honey to 12 tablespoons of water.)
Let the mixture sit for an hour, so that the honey has time to release peroxide.
Apply to wet or dry hair and cover with saran wrap to keep it moist and contain mess. Leave the mixture on for at least an hour then shampoo. Honey residue on the hair may make hair feel stiff, but a good shampooing should remove this.

Cinnamon
source

Cinnamon, like honey, lightens by producing peroxide, and once again, the levels are so low that the hair is not damaged.
Cinnamon is a skin irritant, so take care not to get cinnamon directly on your skin. Ideally, do a patch test first. If your skin becomes irritated, don't use it.
The easiest way to use cinnamon is to mix it with conditioner and apply to hair while it is wet after washing. Cover your hair with saran wrap to prevent mess and keep it moist. Cinnamon can also be added to a honey lightening mixture.

Ingredients:
1-cup deep conditioner (moisturizing)
2 Tbsp. Cinnamon (organic)
Directions:
Mix together all the ingredients and apply to damp hair, concentrate on the areas that you want highlights or just apply all over. Cover the hair with a plastic cap and leave on hair for 3 to 4 hours or
overnight.
Wash out thoroughly; little cinnamon granules can be caught in the hair so washing will take a while.
After three to four applications the hair will be noticeably lighter.
Expect the mixture to smell really good.

Honey and Cinnamon
As the saying goes, "two heads is better than one" or in this case, two lighteners are better than one. Both produce peroxide and together, should work faster than they do alone. The change will still not be instant though.

NB
Dark hair when lightened will begin to show either red or yellow under tones. These might not suit your skin tone, so be prepared
